Medication Abortion Overview

Before You Start

OPTION 1: Mifepristone + Misoprostol
What You Need
Mifepristone: 1 pill (200 mg)
Misoprostol: 4–16 pills (200 mcg each) (exact number depends on weeks pregnant)
Pain & Comfort Medication (Choose ONE)
Ibuprofen 800 mg (every 8 hours)
Naproxen 500 mg (every 12 hours)
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1000 mg (every 8 hours – if allergic to NSAIDs)
You may also use:
Anti-nausea meds (Dramamine, Benadryl, Zofran)
Ginger tea, mint tea, vitamin B6
Heating pad, warm shower, or light walking
Step 1: Take Mifepristone
Swallow 1 tablet of Mifepristone (200 mg) with water.
If swallowing is difficult, it may be crushed or split.
Mild cramping or bleeding may occur (normal)
If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes, contact your provider
Continue to Step 2 even if bleeding starts

Step 2: Take Pain Medication (Recommended)
Take your chosen pain medication before misoprostol to reduce cramps.
Step 3: Take Misoprostol

By Mouth
Place pills under the tongue or inside the cheeks
Hold for 30 minutes
Do not eat, drink, or talk
Swallow remaining fragments
By Vagina
Insert pills about one finger length
Lie down for 30 minutes
